Soda Lake, Nevada

Soda Lake is a volcanic maar, meaning a plume of magma reacted with groundwater to cause an explosion.  The result is a hole in the earth which will often fill with water.  There is only a single tree on Soda Lake and the surrounding desert is flat. A cooperative cloud formation resulted in this remarkable image. Photo © copyright by Ronald J. Saunders.
